METABOLIC SYNDROME ASSESSMENT CLINIC
WHAT IS METABOLIC SYNDROME?
Metabolic Syndrome is a combination of risk factors that make a person more
susceptible to cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart attack, stroke, coronary heart
disease). These risk factors include:
- abdominal obesity
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol levels, and
The combination of mental illness and some medications used to treat mental
illness can increase a person's risk of developing Metabolic Syndrome.
HOW CAN THE CLINIC HELP?
The Metabolic Syndrome Assessment Clinic at Toowong Private Hospital
provides a supportive environment for people with mental illness and
encourages patients to take an interest in their physical health and engage in
healthy behaviours. The clinic aims to prevent Metabolic Syndrome and to
improve patients' overall health and wellbeing.
WHAT DOES THE CLINIC INVOLVE?
During the first appointment, the patient is assessed by a General Practitioner
with expertise in sport and exercise medicine. This assessment involves a
comprehensive medical examination and establishes the patient's exercise
and diet history. The patient is given a pedometer and food/mood diary and is
requested to have a fasting blood test prior to the second appointment.
During the second appointment, the results of the blood test are explained and personal goals are discussed.
After these two initial appointments, patients are followed up regularly by the
General Practitioner and a Registered Nurse to monitor progress and review
goals. The frequency of follow-up will depend on the patient's individual needs.
A report of the results, including recommendations resulting from the
assessment, is forwarded to the patient, their psychiatrist and General
HOW CAN I ACCESS THE CLINIC?
Patients can be referred to the Metabolic Syndrome Assessment Clinic through their treating psychiatrist or General Practitioner. Patients are seen at the clinic as a day patient.
